Award "Preis der Berlin-Brandenburgischen Akademie der Wissenschaften" to Professor Rainer Haselmann

The Prize of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences, donated by the Commerzbank Foundation, recognizes outstanding scientific achievements in the field of the fundamentals of law and economics. In 2019, the prize goes to Rainer Haselmann (Professor of Finance, Accounting and Taxation and Director of the Center for Advanced Studies on the Foundations of Law and Finance). The prize is awarded every two years and includes prize money of 30,000 euros.

On October 21, 2019, the festive award ceremony took place in Berlin. With the award, the academy honored Professor Dr. Rainer Haselmann's quantitative empirical investigations on interdependencies in the financial sector, in particular on the legal, regulatory and social determinants of bank lending.

Martin Hellwig, former Director at the Max Planck Institute for the Study of Collective Goods in Bonn and member of the academy, held the laudation.

Professsor Haselman’s empirical work is exemplary in its focus on the behavior of the participants in the development of hitherto unknown data sources and the imaginative linking of various data sources to determine causal relationships. As far as the work is concerned with the impact of government interventions, it is also an example of what the Center for Advanced Studies on the Foundations of Law and Finance seeks to reflect, an economic analysis of the impact of legal rules in the financial sector.

The ceremonial address was given by academy member Klaus M. Schmidt (Professor of Economics at the Ludwig-Maximilians-University Munich) on the negotiation design of climate agreements.
