14th Swiss Winter Conference on Financial Intermediation

On 29 - 31 March 2021, the Centre for Economic Policy Research (CEPR), the Swiss Finance Institute (SFI), the University of Zürich (UZH), the KU Leuven, the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) and the Center for Advanced Studies on the Foundations of Law and Finance (LawFin) jointly organized the "Lenzerheide" conference: 14th Swiss Winter Conference on Financial Intermediation.

Since 2008, the renowned conference brings together globally leading researchers to present their latest work on financial intermediation, covering both empirics and theory.

In this year’s online version, participants from all over the world had the opportunity to follow a great set of presentations and subsequent discussions over three days to exchange ideas on topics like green, shadow and/or behavioural banking and the impact of regulatory interventions.

As an interesting example, the awarded paper “The Political Economy of Prudential Regulation” by Magdalena Rola-Janicka (Tilburg University) explored the observation that politics seems to matter in shaping financial policies and why regulation is needed. Associated LawFin fellow Elena Carletti (Bocconi University) discussed the paper, highlighting the findings on how political economy factors affect regulatory policy.

Further fellows of the LawFin Center such as Michael Weber (University of Chicago Booth School of Business), Sascha Steffen (Frankfurt School of Finance & Management) or David Martinez-Miera (Universidad Carlos III de Madrid) contributed to this event deepening the understanding of financial intermediation.

Christoph Basten (University of Zurich, SFI & CESifo), Hans Degryse (KU Leuven & CEPR), Rainer Haselmann (Goethe University Frankfurt, LawFin & CEPR) and Boris Hofmann (BIS) formed the organizing committee.
